Trying New Trends: Colored Jeans

written by Kendra

Colored jeans became one of the biggest trends of last fall, and from what I can tell from my current shopping, they are here to stay.

I go back and forth on current trends. I’m not one to adopt every single one that comes out, because I know that many trends are a waste of money. They are everywhere you look for a season, and then out of style just like that that. (Remember the year of the sweater-ponchos? Fleece-vest from Old Navy Season of 2000? Yeeeeah.)

The biggest key that I look for when determining whether I should invest in a trend is pretty simple. A lasting trend is (usually) universally flattering and not a huge deviation from what people are already wearing. Of course, I have to actually *like* the item too. For example, I’m not about to invest in Ugg boots or Northface jackets (although my sister insists that Spyder Jackets are now cool instead of Northface) despite the popularity, because I simply don’t find them attractive.

On to colored jeans…

I’m actually a huge fan of this trend! For a few years now skinny jeans have been “in” so the progression to colored versions of skinny jeans wasn’t that much of a stretch. Because there are an infinite amount of colors, I also believe that these can be flattering on most women’s body types.

I know many many of you are probably apprehensive about skinny jeans. I still think you can wear this trend! First off, don’t knock em til you try em. I think that many women will look great in them! Make sure you are shopping in the right stores and picking flattering brands. No matter if you are average or plus sized, there still is a such thing as flattering and unflattering jeans! If they make you feel awkward, remember that you can always wear a mid-calf  boot to bring the outfit all together and cover the awkward skinny part at the bottom :-)

I have no issue with skinny jeans myself, but my biggest thing with buying colored jeans is coordinating an outfit! I’m not very adventurous with color schemes, you see.  I was determined to try them though, because I think this trend is so fun!

I ventured out to Kohl’s and bought these cute blue jeans from the Lauren Conrad collection. I think my first try at putting an outfit together wasn’t so bad!

I think gold/cream colored items go with about anything, so I decided to buy this striped top and use my other gold/cream accessories to play it “safe” color-wise. I’ve had these amazing heels for about 3 years now, and they are in the top 5 most important items in my closet, for sure. Neutral heels can go with so many outfits, and are perfect for spring/summer/fall (it doesn’t feel like winter here). The only thing that this outfit needs is some hemming, for sure. Once I fix the pants so they are the appropriate length and don’t bunch up, it will be awesome.

I definitely think I may buy a few more colors, pants as well as capris or shorts, for this coming summer and spring. I already have a lot of good tops to go with them, so I think I’m all set!

Colored Jeans

I put this together quickly on Polyvore for another outfit idea. Can you tell I love stripes by now? If you’re nervous about matching “right” with colored jeans, I don’t think you can go wrong with a striped top, matching colored shoes, and gold jewelry.

For more inspiration for colored jeans, you can search Pinterest for a ton of outfit pictures! Feel free to ask me any basic styling questions in the comments too, and I’ll try my best to help you out.

Have any of you tried colored jeans? Are you thinking about it? If you already have pictures up of you styling some awesome ones, let me know in the comments. I’ll check it out!

  1. I think it’s smart that you started with blue to get yourself comfortable since they are similar to regular blue jeans- then you can go a bit more adventurous! That pant/top combo would look crazy awesome with brown boots.

  2. I like your outfit, Kendra, and your Polybore board too. Wouldn’t you know — my recent LOFT order arrived today, containing . . . red skinnies and striped tops. I’m about to try them on.

  3. I love colored jeans and nude heels! (I always pair mine together too!) You look GREAT!

  4. I am a colored jean (really any type of pants) addict. I just bought some green cords today. I’m with you I think it’s going to to stick! And your polyvore is so cute. I’m loving the stripes!

Also I think I’m wearing matching pants but in coral. :)

I just got my first pair of colored skinny jeans a couple weeks ago in a red-orange color and I love how fun they are! I had to smile at your reference to the fleece vest and poncho trends, because both of those happened when I was around 13 and I vividly remember my light blue Old Navy vest and pink poncho :) And I tried out the North Face trend but my current Lands End coat is so much warmer! Anyways, you are rockin’ the colored jeans!

    • We must be around the same age, because I was 12 when the fleece vest thing happened. It’s vividly in my mind because I wore a pastel pink one with a long sleeve gray shirt for my school picture that year, and my best friend wore the *exact* same thing, without us planning it! Long live the year of the fleece! :-P
